Greece ship tragedy: Pakistan observes day of mourning today

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan is observing a day of mourning over the tragic deaths of its national in the ship sinking incident near the coast of Greece on Wednesday.

The national flag is flying at half-mast and special prayers are being offered for the deceased of the Greece ship tragedy.

At least 78 people were drowned when the ill-fated boat with reportedly 400 to 750 people onboard sank in the Mediterranean Sea near the Greek coast. Meanwhile, some 104 people were rescued and sent to Kalamata, Greece, as per to the latest media reports.

On Sunday, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced to observe mourning day on Monday (today) and constituted a four-member high-level committee to probe into the death of dozens of Pakistanis in the Greece boat tragedy.

National Police Bureau Director General Ehsan Sadiq has been appointed chairman of the probe committee while the other members include Foreign Ministry’s Additional Secretary for Africa Javed Imrani, DIG Poonch Zaheer Ahmed and Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) Joint Secretary Faisal Nisar Chaudhry.

The probe committee will collect evidence and facts regarding the people who drowned in the shipwreck to ascertain responsible persons and investigate the human trafficking aspects.

Rajanpur accident claims five lives, 20 injured

RAJANPUR: At least five people were dead and 20 others sustained injuries when a passenger bus overturned in Punjab’s Rajanpur district, ARY News reported on Sunday. Minor boy raped, murdered by uncle in Bannu

BANNU: In yet another incident of sexual assault, a four-year-old boy was allegedly raped and later killed in the Bannu District of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, ARY News reported on Sunday. According to police, the incident took place at Jaman Road in Bannu city where a four-year-old boy was raped and killed by her maternal uncle. The suspect has been taken into custody and is currently being interrogated, said police. Meanwhile, the body of the deceased child has been shifted to a hospital, the police said. Pakistan agrees to IMFs demands for revival of loan programme

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has hinted at addressing the concerns put forward by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in the federal budget for FY2023-24, ARY News reported, citing sources. Pakistan’s efforts are underway to restore the stalled loan programme with the IMF and the breakthrough is likely within two days. According to sources, Pakistan has decided to address the IMF’s concerns in the budget. Sources claimed that Pakistan has started changes upon the demands of the IMF and changes are being made in the budget speech.
